RESPECT AND INCLUSION IN THE WORKPLACE

Respect is defined as ‘respect of oneself and others.’ Respect includes that towards the environment, other people’s privacy, their physical space and property. Respect also extends to differing viewpoints, philosophies, religions, gender, lifestyles, ethnicity, physical ability, age, beliefs and personality.

In the professional arena, treating others with respect and dignity is critical to retaining good workers. According to the Wharton School, “Employees who do not feel they are treated with respect are three times more likely to intend to leave their jobs within two years.” The direct and indirect costs due to perceived lack of respect are staggering. They include lost productivity, low morale, health care costs, costs of hiring and training and damage to a company’s reputation. While most professionals think they treat others with respect, one out of seven employees feels they are treated poorly or very poorly. Left unacknowledged and unaddressed, disrespect in the workplace can lead to demoralization and a diminished bottom line, risks many companies are no longer willing to take.

Designed to compliment our Professional Presence program, Respect and Inclusion in the Workplace is targeted toward virtually anyone who interacts with others on the job.
